Why Home Page Explanatory Videos will ROCK your Website

If you frequently browse web pages in search of cutting edge software or new products, you have probably seen videos pop up describing a company and what they do. Not all websites have these web videos, but lately it has become a growing trend in the online space. If you’re new to the idea, you might be wondering: Why do we need these explainer videos on the home page? The reason: Because we’re all lazy!

Home Page Explanatory Videos

That’s right, as viewers, we don’t want to click on a website and have to read; we want our information right away. If you can’t tell me in under one minute what you do then guess what? I’ve moved on, and I’m posting on Twitter about how annoyed I am because it’s raining today.

Web videos allow us to get the information we want, fast. Think about this: 82% of Internet users view videos online, but only 30% of websites have video, meaning that there is a huge potential for growth for sites with videos.

Just having a video doesn’t guarantee that your business will enjoy viral success. Content and quality matter, and the video must be engaging, exciting and something viewers actually want to watch. Be honest, how many times have you watched #squirrelfail or the David after the Dentist on YouTube? You’re probably watching them right now. These videos are 1. Hilarious and 2. Engaging for the viewer.

We recommend having concise, appealing content in the video that keeps the viewer interested up until the very end. To explain what we mean by this, let’s take a look at what not to do when creating a web video:

Don’t use light rays — this isn’t a dream; it’s real life.
Don’t have a 5 minute video; I’m sure none of you watched it all.
Don’t bore the viewer.
Don’t say UM; have a script learned.

Now let’s take a look at a video done well:

Do tell the story of your product or service. People listen to and enjoy stories, rather than promotional ads.
Do use graphics and exciting material to get your point across.
Do keep it short! Remember, we’re lazy; no one wants to watch a 5 minute video; 60-90 seconds is optimal viewing time for explanatory videos.

In the end, web videos give your viewers a clean, entertaining way to learn about your company or product. They paint a professional image for your company since a website with an amazing video looks much more trustworthy than one without. As long as you appeal to the consumer, you should have no problem increasing traffic flow and visibility to your site through online explanatory videos.
